Painting at Duffus castle

I've recently been reading an Alwyn Crawshaw book which has inspired me to tackle some plein air painting.  So today, with the sun shining, I headed to Duffus castle with my travel rug, sketchbook, pencil and watercolour paints.  Here's how I got on...

I'm now really looking forward to my next plein air painting session, hopefully the weather will be just as good!

Illustration Friday - Voyage

© Joanna Pass

This week I've chosen to paint an illustration only using the ultramarine Dr. Ph. Martin's hydrus watercolour. I've been thinking about trying the hydrus watercolours for a while and I'm pleased I have.  They seem to handle like a drawing ink.  I love Winsor and Newton drawing inks but they're not lightfast which is why the hydrus appealed to me. Verdict so far - Great colour, flow and a little goes a long way!

Illustration Friday - Natural

© Joanna Pass

This weeks Illustration Friday theme fits perfectly into my current work.  I'm observing, photographing and painting Jackdaws.  We have a nesting couple in our disused chimney and a little gang that frequent our garden.  I'm very fond of the way they strut about!

This painting measures 30 x 45cm and I used Winsor and Newton watercolour paints on Hahnemuhle 300gsm hot pressed watercolour paper.  I'm new to using this paper and I wasn't sure at first (it's got quite a fuzzy surface) but I am amazed and delighted at how well the paper took the heavy washes.  No cockling and the paint didn't soak and dry too quickly, giving me time to work without dried paint edges appearing.  Brilliant!

Illustration Friday - Sizzle

©Joanna Pass

Poor Mouse!  His tail made a sizzle just as it turned sooty and very, very hot.

Just a quick pen and watercolour wash illustration.  I thought the theme was quite a tricky one this week and it's taken me ages to think beyond bacon, sausages and eggs!

Illustration Friday - Red

© Joanna Pass

Wow, it's been ages since I've posted an Illustration Friday pic. My illustration I chose to paint for this weeks theme 'red' evolved from drawing the girls tilted head.  I asked myself why was she looking like this and decided she might be playing hide and seek and just taking a sneaky peek from behind the curtain.  A risky move in hide and seek as someone might spot you!

Spring time

The sun is shining, plants are beginning to bloom and the birds are very busy nesting. The air feels full of optimism.  I do love Spring!  How about you?

Moustache

'Mouse in the Moustache'

When I thought about moustaches I imagined a little mouse peeping out.  Perhaps the mouse lives there or perhaps the mouse is just visiting!  I'm not sure...

My original pen drawn Mouse in the Moustache is now available to buy from etsy.

Illustration Friday - Travel

Wishing you all carefree holiday travels.  I hope the sun shines wherever you are.

Speaking of the sun, the weather was beautiful in Findhorn when I took my latest collection of hand pulled screen prints to the fabulous Old Milk Parlour.  It's a weaving studio and gift shop owned by the talented Bridie and my prints are on sale now!

Illustration Friday - Liquid

 A drop of magic medicine.

Quick pencil sketch on a Post It note.  If you could see my desk I wouldn't need to tell you how much I love a Post It note!
